Golden Eagle Abundance in Alaska: Migration Counts and Movement Data Generate a Conservative Population Estimate

چکیده

Estimating species density and abundance is challenging but important for establishing conservation management strategies. Significant progress has been made toward estimating Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in the conterminous United States of America (USA) much less known about eagle Alaska. Here, we paired migration count GPS-tracking data collected near Gunsight Mountain, Alaska, a Bayesian framework to estimate number Eagles south-central We estimated 1204 (95% credible interval: 866, 1526) potentially breeding (≥4 yr old) annually moved through Mountain corridor summered over an area 150,325 km2 equating 0.80 eagles/100 km2. By extrapolating across species' nesting range Alaska (1,180,489 km2) incorporating published productivity age-specific survival rates eagles <4 old into our hierarchical model, 12,717 9043, 16,349) all ages occur annually. propose this as conservative statewide population because used methods that likely underestimated size. Even so, three five times larger than previous estimates represents one quarter USA's population.

Surgical treatment of bumblefoot in a captive golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)

The golden eagle is one of the world's largest living birds. Footpad dermatitis, also known as plantar pododermatitis or bumblefoot, is a condition characterized by lesions due to contact with unhealthy "perching" conditions, such as plastic perches, sharp-cornered perches on the ventral footpad of birds. A young female golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in Fars province of Iran was presented to ...

Regulation of Bald Eagle Reproductive Rates in Southeast Alaska

I examined the influence of food abundance and habitat quality on reproduction of Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in the Chilkat Valley, Alaska. The proportion of active nests was greatest and the timing of laying earliest in portions of the study area where food was most abundant. Clutch size was not related to food availability. Offspring survival was higher in breeding areas where foo...

Public Policy Institute of California California Counts population trends and profiles Death in the Golden State

A black man in California can expect to live 68.6 years on average, which is far below the life expectancy of the average California white male, who can expect to live 75.5 years. Despite the impressive gains in American longevity over the past century, significant disparities in life expectancies such as this one persist across racial and ethnic groups in California. These racial and ethnic di...

Bottom‐up processes drive reproductive success in an apex predator

One of the central goals of the field of population ecology is to identify the drivers of population dynamics, particularly in the context of predator-prey relationships. Understanding the relative role of top-down versus bottom-up drivers is of particular interest in understanding ecosystem dynamics. Our goal was to explore predator-prey relationships in a boreal ecosystem in interior Alaska t...
